500 Emails. Here's The First One.
This is Daily Pursuit email number 500.
Monday to Friday, for 100 weeks.
So this morning I went back and read number one, sent back in 2024.
Here it is, in full:
On the days you feel tired… do the work.
On the days you feel sore… do the work.
On the days you feel unmotivated… do the work.
On the days you feel defeated… do the work.
On the days you don't feel like doing the work… do the damn work.
It's always within your control. And it controls everything else.
That's the entire email. Sixty words.
And I still agree with every one of them. But look at what's missing...
It tells you what to do. It doesn't tell you a single thing about why you don't.
The obvious read is that I've gotten much better at writing since then. But that's not the only thing that has improved.
Here's what writing daily actually does to you… you run out of things to assert. Fast.
You can only write “do the work” so many times. Within about three weeks, you've said everything obvious you believe, and the well runs dry.
So you have to go further. Instead of “do the work”, you have to ask why people don't. Why the person who knows exactly what to do still doesn't do it.
What's actually happening in that gap.
And you can't answer that with a slogan. You have to genuinely think about it.
Then do it again tomorrow. And the day after.
The commitment is what drives it.
Without one, you stop at the first satisfying answer. With one, you keep going until you find something true.
Knowing that tens of thousands of you are expecting a high value email from me in your inbox every morning keeps me accountable to that commitment.
Do that 500 times and it stops being just a writing practice. It changes how you think about everything, because you've spent years being unable to accept your own first answer.
So here's what I'd like to encourage you to do this week... start your own version.
Not publicly. Not for an audience. Almost nobody read mine for months, and that didn't matter at all, because the value was never in the sending.
Write down one thing you believe every morning. Then try to explain why it's true.
You'll find out very quickly which of your beliefs are load-bearing and which ones you've just been carrying around.
Thank you for reading. Truly. Whether you've been here since the first sixty words or you joined last week, I appreciate you.
Two quick things before I leave you to your Tuesday.
First, I'd genuinely like to know which one landed.
After 500 of these, reply and tell me the email you still think about. The one that changed something, or the one you've come back to. I read every reply.
Second, if these have been useful to you, send this link to one person who'd get something from it: https://josephmencel.com/pages/daily-blog
That's how this continues to grow. One person at a time.
If you know someone who would benefit from reading this, please forward it to them. It may change the trajectory of their life for the better, and the catalyst could be you.
