Can You Talk About It Without The Emotional Charge?
There's something in your past you think you've moved on from.
The job you left.
The relationship that ended.
The person who did something you're still not over.
The thing that happened years ago now.
You don't think about it much anymore. So you've assumed it's processed.
Here's the actual test...
Can you tell the story flat?
Not can you avoid thinking about it.
Not has enough time passed.
Not have you stopped mentioning it.
Can you describe what happened - out loud, to someone who asks - without the emotional charge?
No heat in your voice.
No building the case.
No need for them to agree with you about who was wrong.
Just the facts, delivered like something that happened, rather than something that's still happening to you.
That's the difference between moved on and moved away from.
And most people confuse the two.
Because avoidance feels like progress. If you never go near it, it never hurts, and you take the absence of pain as evidence of healing. Then someone asks about it at a dinner. And within thirty seconds you're building a case to a person who wasn't accusing you of anything.
That's the emotional charge. Still fully intact. Just untouched.
Here's what makes this worth knowing.
The activation isn't a character flaw. It's information.
It tells you that something in there hasn't been resolved yet - usually a piece you haven't fully admitted, or a version of events you're still defending, or an outcome you haven't actually accepted.
And you can only work on the part you can see.
So try it deliberately. Take the thing you think you're past, and tell it to someone who you trust plainly. Just what happened. No case, no villain, no defence.
If you can do that, you're genuinely through it.
If you can't, you know exactly where the work is.
That's not a bad place to be.
It's just not where you thought you were.
