Everyone Wants The Goal. Almost No One Wants This.

Everyone wants the goal.

Almost no one talks about the responsibility that comes along with it.

It’s nice to be the boss… until it’s time to do what bosses actually need to do.

It’s nice to be a parent… until it’s time to do what parents actually need to do.

It’s nice to be a pro athlete… until it’s time to do what pro athletes actually need to do.

It’s nice to be an entrepreneur… until it’s time to do what entrepreneurs actually need to do.

It’s nice to earn a lot of money… until it’s time to do what high earners actually need to do.

The goal is exciting. It’s clean. It looks good in your head and even better when you describe it to someone else.

But every goal worth achieving has a weight attached to it. A set of responsibilities that don’t show up in the fantasy version.

The boss has to make decisions that disappoint people.

The parent has to show up exhausted and keep showing up exhausted every day.

The pro athlete has to train when no one is watching and everything hurts.

The entrepreneur has to carry the risk that keeps others awake at night.

The high earner has to manage what most people never have to think about.

This is the part that gets skipped.

People fall in love with the outcome and completely ignore what the outcome demands of them.

Then they get there… and they’re not ready.

Not because they weren’t capable of reaching the goal. 

But because they were never honest with themselves about what the goal would require once they had achieved it.

So before you chase anything, ask the harder question.

Not “do I want this?”, but “am I ready for what this will ask of me once I have it?”

Because the goal and the responsibility are not two separate things.

They’re the same thing.

And if you’re not ready for the responsibility…

You’re not ready for the goal.
