Fit Your Own Oxygen Mask First
There's a line in every flight safety briefing that doubles as some of the best life advice ever written.
In the event of an emergency, fit your own oxygen mask before assisting others.
It sounds almost selfish every time you hear it.
Surely you help the people who need it most?
The child next to you?
The person who can't manage on their own?
But the logic is airtight.
If you pass out trying to help someone else first, now there are two people who need saving. You're no good to anyone unconscious.
So you secure your own mask first. Not because you matter more. Because you're useless to them if you don't.
This is one of the hardest pieces of advice to accept, especially if you're wired to put others first.
If benevolence sits near the top of your values, this goes against every instinct you have.
You want to do right by people.
You want to give.
You want to carry the weight so the people around you don't have to.
But taken too far, with no boundaries to hold it in place, that instinct quietly destroys the very thing that makes you useful to them.
You see it in business all the time... the leader who pours everything into the team, sacrifices their own wellbeing, and runs themselves into the ground.
It looks noble. But there's no point digging yourself into a hole so your team can climb out of theirs, if you drag the entire business down with you.
Nobody wins in that scenario.
You also see it in parenting, especially early on... a parent so focused on doing everything for their young children that they let themselves go entirely. The sleep slides. The nutrition slides. The health and fitness slides. The basic discipline of looking after themselves disappears.
And here's the uncomfortable truth...
You cannot show up for your children the way you're capable of if you've stopped showing up for yourself. No matter how hard you try. No matter how much you love them. A depleted version of you simply cannot deliver what a healthy version of you could.
The same pattern shows up in friendships, relationships, and every corner of life where a good person gives more than they can sustain.
The intention is beautiful.
The result is depletion.
And depletion helps no one.
If this sounds like you, here's what matters.
Fitting your own oxygen mask first isn't selfish. It's the precondition for everything else.
Your health.
Your sleep.
Your nutrition.
Your training.
The control of your own controllables.
These aren't indulgences you earn after everyone else is taken care of.
They're what make taking care of everyone else possible.
Secure your own mask first.
Then help the person next to you breathe.
If you know someone who would benefit from reading this, please forward it to them. It may change the trajectory of their life for the better, and the catalyst could be you.
