Pain Gets You In. Pleasure Keeps You There.

Pain Gets You In. Pleasure Keeps You There.

There are only two levers.

1. Away from pain.
2. Toward pleasure.

Everything you’ve ever achieved was fueled by one or the other.

And the received wisdom is that pain is the stronger of the two, but only for as long as the pain lasts.

The health scare.
The negative bank balance.
The moment someone said something that landed badly.

That’s rocket fuel. It’ll get you out of bed at 5am for about eleven days.

Then the pain fades, because that’s what pain eventually does. And the drive goes with it, because it was never separate from the pain in the first place.

The pursuit of pleasure is the sustainable one... but here’s what often gets missed.

At the start, there is no pleasure available.

You can’t enjoy working out when you’re unfit and weak and everything hurts.
You can’t enjoy earning money when you're digging yourself out of a hole.
You can’t enjoy the business when nothing’s working yet.

Pleasure-based inspiration requires two things… competence, and visible progress.

On day one you have neither.

Which means the sequence isn’t a preference. It’s the only order that works.

Pain gets you up and going. Pleasure keeps you moving.

And the entire game is the handover.

Because there’s always a window… where the pain has faded and the pleasure has started to become available.

You’re getting stronger.
You're building a financial buffer.
The business is finally starting to click.

That’s the moment.

And it passes quietly, because nothing dramatic happens.

But miss it, and you’re relying on a fuel that ran out weeks ago. Which is exactly why it falls apart at the point it should be getting easier.

So make the handover deliberately.

Go looking for the pleasure.

Track the numbers so the progress is undeniable.
Notice what you actually enjoy about it and build more of that in.
Find the version of the thing you’d do even on a good day.

Because the alternative is grim. If pain is your only lever, you need a fresh crisis every time it fades away. And that means either waiting for something bad to happen, or quietly creating it.

That’s no way to build anything.

Use the pain. It’s honest, it’s available, and it works.

Just don’t rely on it over the long term.
