Stop Protecting People From The Pressure That Would Help Them Grow

Stop Protecting People From The Pressure That Would Help Them Grow

You think you are helping people by shielding them.

From pressure.

From hard conversations.

From commercial reality.

From the consequences of poor decisions.

From standards they might struggle to meet.

But you are not helping them.

You are weakening them.

Because every time you protect someone from the pressure that would grow them, you rob them of the opportunity to become more capable.

You teach them to avoid discomfort.

You teach them to wait for rescue.

You teach them that someone else will carry the weight.

That is not leadership. That is over-protection dressed up as kindness.

Real leadership does not remove every hard edge.

It teaches people how to handle hard edges well.

It gives them responsibility.

It gives them standards.

It gives them honest feedback.

It gives them the chance to rise.

Will that create discomfort?

Yes.

Good.

Growth always does.

If you want strong people around you, you cannot keep cushioning them from everything that would make them stronger.

That applies to your staff.

Your team.

Your kids.

Yourself.

So if someone around you keeps underperforming, consider where you are protecting them from the very pressure that would help them grow.

Because pressure is not the problem.

Your over-protection is.

If you know someone who would benefit from reading this, please forward it to them. It may change the trajectory of their life for the better, and the catalyst could be you.
