They Agreed With Everything. Then Nothing Changed.
You had the hard conversation.
You explained the problem.
You explained how it should be done.
They nodded along the whole way... “Yep. Yep. Got it. Makes sense.”
Then a week later, the exact same thing happened again.
Here's what actually went on in that conversation...
They weren't agreeing. They were exiting.
Because admitting you don't understand feels like admitting you're not good enough.
Agreement is the fastest way out of an uncomfortable conversation. Say yes enough times and it ends. No disagreement, no follow-up questions, no risk of looking like you don't understand.
And you let it end, because it was uncomfortable for you too.
That's the trap.
Next time someone agrees with everything you've said, ask one question.
"Can you repeat that back to me?"
Not aggressively. Genuinely.
"I want to make sure I explained that properly."
One of two things happens.
They repeat it back accurately, and you both walk away knowing it landed.
Or they can't - and now you're actually having the conversation you thought you were having five minutes ago.
They won't love it in the moment. That's fine.
Because the alternative is a pleasant conversation that changes nothing, followed by the same problem next week, followed eventually by a much harder conversation about why nothing has improved.
You are never choosing between comfort and discomfort.
You are choosing between a small discomfort now and a much larger one later.
Ask them to repeat it back.
If you know someone who would benefit from reading this, please forward it to them. It may change the trajectory of their life for the better, and the catalyst could be you.
