Why Haven't You Asked Yet?
There's something you need help with right now and you haven't asked for it.
You've got reasons, of course.
You don't want to be a burden.
They're busy enough.
You should be able to handle it yourself.
Underneath every one of those sits the same belief.
"If I accept help, I'll owe them something."
So you don't ask.. you carry it alone, and call it independence.
Now think about the last time someone good asked you for a favour.
Not someone who takes or takes advantage. Someone decent, who you respect, who genuinely needs the help.
How did it feel?
You wanted to help. You probably went further than they asked. And at no point did you think "now they owe me."
You helped because they're a good person, and you're a good person, and that's what good people do for each other.
That's it. That's the whole transaction.
So why do you assume it works differently when the request is coming from you?
This one landed hardest for me when I became a father. I'd always been uncomfortable asking my parents for anything. Then I had a son, and understood immediately that I'd help him with absolutely anything, at any time, without a second's thought.
Which meant my parents had probably always felt that way about me.
But it isn't only family. It's the mate who'd drop everything if you called. The colleague who'd cover for you without being asked twice. The person you've helped before who's been waiting for a chance to return the favour.
When you refuse to ask, you're denying them something they'd genuinely want to give.
And you're denying yourself the help that would make it easier.
Two losses, from one belief you've never examined.
So when you catch yourself deciding not to ask, run it through three steps:
1. Notice the moment you talk yourself out of it.
2. Name the belief underneath. "I'll owe them" or "I'll be a burden."
3. Replace it with something truer. "Good people want to help good people" or "Being asked isn't a cost."
Because the relationships worth having aren't ledgers.
And the people in them are usually waiting for a chance to prove it.
If you know someone who would benefit from reading this, please forward it to them. It may change the trajectory of their life for the better, and the catalyst could be you.
