You're A Different Person At Work
Mindset gets talked about like it's a trait.
You've either got a growth mindset or you haven't. Fixed or growth. One setting, applied to your whole life.
That's not how it works.
Your mindset is domain-specific.
Think about how you handle a setback at work.
You analyse it.
You look for what you can learn.
You make adjustments and go again.
You assume you'll get better at this because you've gotten better at everything else in your career that you've put time and effort into.
That's textbook growth mindset. You do it without thinking.
Now think about how you handle a setback somewhere else.
Your body.
A relationship.
Something creative you've tried.
A conversation that didn’t go the way you wanted it to.
For most people, there's at least one area where the response is completely different.
“I’ve always been like this.”
“I'm bad at this stuff.”
“That's not really me.”
Same person. Same brain. Two completely different operating systems, depending on the domain.
And here's why that matters...
It means the capability isn't the problem.
If you were genuinely fixed-minded, you'd be fixed everywhere. You'd have given up on your career the first time something didn't work.
You didn't. You've got years of evidence that you can take a setback, extract the lesson, and improve.
You're just not applying it everywhere.
Which turns an identity problem into a transfer problem. And those are very different things to solve.
One is about becoming someone new. The other is about carrying something you already own into a room you haven't carried it into yet.
So ask yourself honestly:
Where in my life do I respond like I'm capable of improving?
And where do I respond like I've already been assessed and the result is in?
The gap between those two areas isn't telling you what you're capable of.
It's telling you where you've stopped trying.
If you know someone who would benefit from reading this, please forward it to them. It may change the trajectory of their life for the better, and the catalyst could be you.
