You're Digging Your Next Hole Right Now
I define discipline as doing what needs to be done when you don't feel like doing it.
Most other definitions are quite similar.
But to be fair, that definition points you at the wrong moment.
Because when you're in a hole, the incentive is right there beside you.
You're out of shape, so you train, even when you don’t feel like it.
The business is quiet, so you chase leads, even when you don’t feel like it.
The relationship is fracturing, so you go to the counselling, even when you don’t feel like it.
The pain is doing the convincing for you.
Discipline in a hole is a response to consequences you can already feel.
The real test comes later.
The business gets quiet, so you start following up leads properly. You get serious about retention. You put real effort into referrals. Then it works. You get busy. And the moment you’re busy, the follow-up stops, the retention work slides, and the referral strategy quietly disappears… until things go quiet again.
Or your health. You’re out of shape, so you train hard, dial in the nutrition, take the supplements, do the cardio. Then it works. You look good, you feel good. So the diet loosens. Sessions get skipped. Because you’re in shape now… until you’re not.
Or your relationship. Things get strained, so you communicate more. You set goals together. You do the work. Then it improves. And the communication drops off, the intentionality fades, and you drift back into autopilot… until it’s strained again.
Same loop. Every time.
And notice what’s actually happening here.
The bad season isn’t bad luck. You built it. You built it by dropping the exact behaviours that created the good season, the moment the good season arrived.
Which means you’ll never need discipline to escape a hole… if you stay disciplined at the top.
So why is it so hard to hold when things are good?
Because there’s no immediate reward.
When you’re digging out, every call and every session and every conversation gives you something back straight away.
You feel the progress.
The gap is closing.
The feedback is instant.
When you’re already there, doing the same things gives you nothing today. Nothing tomorrow. Nothing you can see.
It only pays off in a version of your life that never falls apart in the first place.
A collapse that doesn’t happen.
A quiet season that never comes.
You don’t get to feel that. You just get to keep what you have.
That’s a much harder thing to stay disciplined for.
But that’s the whole game.
Anyone can be disciplined when the pain is loud enough to force it.
The people who stay at the top are the ones who keep doing the work when nothing is forcing them to. When they’ve earned the right to ease off, and they don’t take it.
So look at wherever things are currently going well for you and ask yourself honestly - what have you already started letting slide?
Because that’s the beginning of the next hole.
And you’re the one digging it.
