I Woke Up At 3am With My Heart Pounding

Yesterday morning I woke up at 3am in a heightened state of anxiety.

Mind racing.
Heart pumping.
Stomach in a knot.

That heavy, restless feeling in your body where something feels wrong but you can’t immediately name what.

After more than a decade of mindfulness practice and work with clinical psychology, I have the tools to handle moments like this. So rather than getting swept up in it, I did what I’ve trained myself to do.

I stepped back and I watched it with curiosity.

I observed the anxiety instead of becoming it. And I got curious about where it was actually coming from.

And what I found was this…

It wasn’t fear of anything happening to me or the people I love.
It wasn’t a real threat at all.

It was a feeling of lack.

A deep, gnawing sense that I haven’t done enough.
That I’m not doing enough.
That I haven’t achieved enough.

And here’s why that’s so strange.

If I take the life I’m living right now and show it to the version of me from ten years ago, I have eclipsed everything that version could ever have hoped for.

Take it back another ten to twenty years ago, the life I have today would have been unimaginable. Not a stretch goal. Impossible.

My family.
My fitness.
My finances.
The work I get to do.
The number of people I get to impact every single day.

By every measure that younger me could have dreamed of, I’m living a life beyond what he thought possible.

And yet there I was at 3am, heart pounding, feeling like none of it was enough.

I’m sharing this with you because it’s a first-hand experience of something you’ve probably heard a hundred times as a cliché, but might not have fully believed yet.

The goalposts always move.

You’ve heard it said that you should focus on the journey, not the destination.
The process, not the product.
That you can’t tie your happiness to some future achievement.

It sounds nice. It sounds like something you put on a poster.

But yesterday morning I lived the proof of it.

Because if achievement was the cure for that feeling of lack, I would never have woken up with it.

By any standard I once held, I’ve already arrived.

And yet the feeling was still there.

That’s the part nobody quite prepares you for.

You will never reach a point where what you’ve done feels like enough.

Not because you haven’t done enough, but because the moment you arrive at the level you were chasing, you’ll see further than you could before.

You’ll realise you’re capable of even more.

And the goalposts will quietly move again.

So if you’re out there grinding toward some future milestone, telling yourself that’s where the peace lives, I want you to hear this from someone who’s reached milestones he never thought he’d touch.

The peace was never waiting at the destination.

It can only ever be found in the here and now.

In the work itself.
In the people beside you.
In who you’re becoming, not what you’re accumulating.

The goalposts will keep moving.

That’s not a flaw to fix. It’s just what it means to be someone who’s capable of growth.

The trick isn’t to finally do enough.

It’s to recognise that you already are enough, while you keep building anyway.

I’m still working on that one myself.

But at 3am yesterday morning, I understood it more clearly than I ever have before.

If you know someone who would benefit from reading this, please forward it to them. It may change the trajectory of their life for the better, and the catalyst could be you.
