Why You Snap At The People Closest To You
Someone asked you a question you'd already answered.
Someone left a small thing undone after you reminded them.
Someone made a minor mistake for the second time.
And your reaction was bigger than it should have been.
You knew it at the time. You could feel the size mismatch as it came out.
It’s because you were already carrying something.
The pressure was loaded before they walked into the room.
The difficult week.
The decision you haven't made.
The thing that's been sitting on you for days.
It had nowhere to go. Then someone gave it somewhere.
They didn't cause the frustration. They were just the closest person when it needed a target.
And here's the part that’s just plain unfair…
Proximity is the only qualification.
Which means it lands on your partner. Your kids. The person you work beside every day. Not because you value them least, but because they're the ones in the room.
The people furthest from you get your most measured self. The people closest get whatever's left.
And the real damage is that they don't know it wasn't about them.
So they build a story.
“I did something wrong.”
“She's unhappy with me.”
“I need to be careful around him today.”
And you never correct it, because from where you're standing it was just a bad moment that passed.
To them it was data. And enough of those, over enough weeks, is how people start walking on eggshells around you.
So two things to keep in mind this week:
1. Notice The Gap. When the reaction outsizes the trigger, stop and ask what you're actually carrying.
2. Say It Out Loud. “I’m sorry. That wasn't about you. I’m carrying something from work and it landed on you. I apologise.”
Ten seconds. And it stops them writing a story that was never true.
Because you'll never fully stop it happening, but you can stop the people you love paying for something they had nothing to do with.
If you know someone who would benefit from reading this, please forward it to them. It may change the trajectory of their life for the better, and the catalyst could be you.
