Nobody Is Watching. Nothing Is Keeping Score.
There are two things the human brain genuinely cannot comprehend; the infinitely large, and the infinitely small.
And almost every fear holding you back lives in the gap between them.
Let’s start with the large.
There are 8.3 billion people on this planet.
A million social media followers - the number people build entire identities around - is 0.012% of them.
A million copies sold.
A million dollars earned.
A million views seen.
All of it rounds to zero when you consider the scale of the species.
Not as an insult. As arithmetic. The biggest success you can picture is statistically invisible. Which means something uncomfortable and freeing at the same time... the audience you're performing for barely even exists.
Now the small.
We're all on a rock orbiting an ordinary star. One of roughly a hundred billion in this galaxy.
And this galaxy is one of about two trillion in the observable universe.
If there's anyone out there looking back, our sun isn't a sun to them. It's one more faint dot in their night sky, indistinguishable from the rest - if they can see it at all.
There is no cosmic scoreboard. Nothing is keeping count.
Now put those two scales against the three things that actually stop people.
1. Fear Of Failure. You're afraid of something that, at any scale beyond your own head, leaves no trace. The business that doesn't work. The thing you tried publicly that didn't land. Nobody is recording it. The humiliation you're imagining has an audience of about nine people, and they'll have forgotten by Thursday.
2. Fear Of Other People's Opinions. You're worried about the judgment of maybe twenty people. Out of 8.3 billion. And every single one of them is thinking almost entirely about themselves.
3. Self-Doubt. You've decided you're not good enough, measured against a standard you invented, in a system nobody is grading, on a planet nobody can see.
Every one of those fears requires an audience, a scoreboard, or a permanent record.
All three barely even exist.
The nihilist conclusion is that nothing matters and you should stop trying.
But the insignificance cuts both ways.
Here’s how I like to look at it…
If nothing is watching, nothing is judging. If no meaning is assigned, then the only meaning available is the one you create.
The scale doesn't remove your purpose. It removes your audience.
And those are very different things.
You were never actually doing it for them. You just thought you were, because fear convinced you someone was keeping score.
So go and do the audacious thing.
Start the business.
Put your name on it.
Say the thing out loud.
Try the thing that might not work.
The universe will not notice. Nobody will remember. There is no permanent record and nothing is at stake beyond the life you're actually living.
Which means the only person who will ever know you didn't do it…
Is you.
If you know someone who would benefit from reading this, please forward it to them. It may change the trajectory of their life for the better, and the catalyst could be you.
